lotte brockbank (she/her)
Hello, I’m Lotte. My life-long love of storytelling and all things visual, probably stems from being surrounded by books and tv as a kid (I’m still obsessed with The Clangers). Before exploring illustration, I worked in film and theatre as a prop maker, making everything from giant chicken legs to Tudor curtains to dragon puppets. I’d been immersed in the world of storytelling for a long time, but always for other people.
When I started the MA I thought the ideas would come easily, but its taken a lot of work to get to the place where what’s in my head comes out on the page! My background in making is partly why I fell in love with printmaking as I love physical processes. At the moment I like using stencils to layer soft shapes in mono-print to draw into with pencils and charcoal. I love the depth and softness you can achieve with mono-print layers, and it’s really influenced the way that I draw and paint now.
My inspiration comes in many forms, I love animation, poetry, collaging and free-writing. Mostly I try to listen to that strange inner voice, the one that’s drawn to unexpected things, the one that tapped me on the shoulder three years ago and said “I want to illustrate a children’s book!”
