Circle, Lok Ling YUEN (she/her)
I’m Circle Yuen, a Hong Kong-born illustrator based in the UK. Ten years ago, I faced the challenges of family reorganization and felt helpless, especially when it came to explaining it to my little girl. But Babette Cole's "Two of Everything" instilled hope within us.
Alongside my MA studies, I worked with the separated families support groups and co-launched “Today is Friday”,a picture book crowdfunding project for community education addressing gender-based violence and family restructuring in Asia. Half of the picturebooks were gifted and delivered to the families in need such as separated families and frontline professionals in Taiwan and Hong Kong.
As an illustrator, I wholeheartedly believe in the power of graphic narratives to capture unspeakable moments and transform traumas. I think of picturebooks as paper ships; they take us on a journey that helps us understand the pleasures and sorrows of each other’s lives.
