aBBY Hobbs (she/they)

Abby is an illustrator, campervan explorer, and orange-cat enthusiast.

Abby’s been having lots of fun diving into memories of being ten. Highlights include climbing trees pretending to be feral, writing and illustrating her debut ‘The Kitten’s First Adventure’ (to very limited acclaim), and wearing head-to-toe camouflage to the school disco where she spent all her pocket money on rainbow dust and panda pops. Abby has channeled these memories and feelings into a first-person journal of the drawing and doodle-obsessed Robyn, aged ten, and a second wordless story about a girl and her cat exploring the woodland / imaginary jungle together.

Abby’s heart is always drawn to middle grade, both fiction and nonfiction, as these books grew her imagination and love of reading and drawing. Abby enjoys using her voice as both herself (aged 34 and ¾) and her younger self, to tell humorous and warm tales with quirky illustrations.

The Journal of a Wandering Robyn

The first of my two final projects is a journal of tomboyish and neurodivergently-spicy Robyn, ten, who loves to draw. She talks about her friends, food, and climbing trees, but after a new girl befriends her, Robyn begins to think this new friend isn’t actually very nice at all...

The Secret Jungle

The second of my two final projects is a silent story of a girl and her cat exploring the woodland next to the graveyard behind her house out of boredom, and finding a whole jungle world of her own imagination to explore.

Varjak Paw – SF Said

For my paradox MA project, I illustrated two chapters of SF Said's Varjak Paw. I wanted to keep the colours narratively selective, with gritty textures and big graphic shapes to work collaboratively with the text.
